Go Al, Go!

People probably already know this, but it was just announced that Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
I think it is great that they are being recognized for their work and, more importantly, that the cause is getting this sort of attention and visibility. I think this will only help to push things even further into the mainstream.

heard on the BBC this morning an interview with somebody who was basically saying Gore is an ego maniac, and that this was somehow a political move, and that the Peace Prize will lose credibility because of it… go figure…

So, I do think that over the past few years, the Nobel Prize committee has used the Nobel Peace prize for quasi-political purposes.
I think the fact that the 2005 Peace Prize went to ElBaradei and the IAEA was a total intentional slap in the face to the U.S.
And I wouldn’t doubt it if there is some tinge of this as well — a bit of a “wake up America”.

By its very nature, the peace prize is political. (While the other Nobel’s aren’t necessarily political, they are usually viewed through a political lens. Look at what happened with Harold Pinter a couple years back.)
And, besides, any reward Gore received was likely to cause furor among those who don’t believe in global warming. (The The UK Telegraph also had a grumpy response this morning.) Nothing int he world’s going to make everyone like Gore or his message. So? It’s still the right message, and still nice to see him rewarded for making the stand.
